COVID-19: Entry protocols for yachts have been affected by the pandemic. See the Biosecurity section for details.

Officials in most ports are not accustomed to visiting yachts hence the formalities can take a while. Authorities may insist on searching the boat. Expect the process to take at least 4-5 hours.

Most marinas and yacht clubs instruct first-time visitors to check in at the port prior to proceeding to a marina.

Customs

First, check in with the Customs officials.

Customs will want to have a copy of the ship’s papers (take the original as well), a crew list, a list of equipment and goods on board and your last port clearance.

Officially, Customs should issue visiting yachts with a Transire (form C27 here) – permission to proceed to another port. This is intended to be shown to Customs at subsequent Tanzanian ports. This must be filled in in triplicate and one copy kept with the boat along with the clearance papers. Have these forms prepared in advance as most offices don’t have forms available.

Note: Latest reports from cruisers are mixed. Some say that the Transire is no longer mandatory and never asked for. Others report having to complete the forms. Ask Customs at your Port of Entry to be certain.

Immigration

For Immigration, you will need a passport valid for the duration of stay and your vaccination cards.

Visas can be obtained from Immigration on arrival, or in advance. See the Immigration section below.

If you have already cleared into Tanzania, checking in with Immigration is not required, though proof of check-in may be requested.
