Great Exuma: George Town - Docking

Once in front of Georgetown, you can drop the anchor almost everywhere except for the busy shipping channel that leads from the government dock to the north. The anchorage is very sheltered but the dinghy ride to town can get you very wet.

With the dinghy, you can enter Lake Victoria, where Exuma Markets provides a dinghy dock with easy access to the supermarket and other shops. On the opposite side, a smaller floating dock gives direct access to the fuel station.

Nearby Stocking Island has Volleyball Beach – the place where it all happens. You may use all the facilities as long as you buy your drinks and order your food at the bar “Chat ‘n Chill”. WiFi internet is available, you have to buy time-slots to log in. Kevalli House Marina & Cottages is situated here, offering short and long term storage and guardinage for yachts.

Emerald Bay Marina (12 Miles N. of Georgetown, Exumas) has now reopened and welcomes yachts. They have some ‘non-service’ slips that are cheaper if you are planning on leaving your boat here. Cruisers do warn about the surge here, however, so be sure to tie-up carefully and use chafe guards.

There are three marinas in George Town.

Two new developments, February Point Marina and Marina Village Crab Cay, have both stalled and are not open.

It is also possible to tie alongside the wall off Summers Quay for no charge.

See security warning in comments – October 2015.

Popped into George Town to check into the Bahamas from the west coast walking up a dirt track to the main road. We were picked up straight away by a very friendly women who we later found out to be a tourist department helper. Who we would like to thank. We all had to be present at the immigration office which is a bit of a change to the usual stay on yacht till you are cleared in. Everyone was great and our (so called) taxi driver was very helpful taking us back to the boat, stopping at a couple of places. Customs were the most friendly I had come across in the Caribbean/Bahamas.

Top II Bottom is a hardware/general store that, here in the islands, has quite a supply of random items. Plumbing, electrical, housewares, kids stuff, fishing and snorkelling, hardware, etc. Worth it to walk the aisles and see what they have.

A 20′ X 2′ X 1/2″ piece of fiberglass with one end in the mud bottom & one end at the surface has been found to exist in the channel north of Barraterre. The object is just west of the recommended route to Barraterre near 23° 42.167′ N 76°02.919′ W. See Chart EX 27, page 43, Explorer Chartbook Exumas and Ragged Islands, Seventh Edition.

    More Theft In Georgetown
    Published October 29, 2015 | By oceaned

Georgetown, Exuma is experiencing a higher rate of thefts than I have ever seen, and I have been involved here since 1990. In the last several weeks two dinghies with outboards have been stolen from cruising boats. Also, Mary Wheaton on Stocking Island has had her Boston Whaler and engine stolen from her ramp when it was pulled out of the water.

This does not bode well for the nearing cruising season. All cruisers who are planning to visit or spend any time in Georgetown should reconsider their safety measures for their dinghies and outboard engines.
