There are buoys marking the channel into the bay. However, they are not in the deepest part of the entrance and the channel has not been dredged as our charts indicate. The channel markers lead you directly into a rock that is 8.5 ft deep and not dredged to 6M as are chart notes indicated.
Reported by Jose Mendez of Marina Pescadería:
Just a quick note to let you know that Marina Pescadería, located in the Bay of Puerto Real in the west coast town of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, resisted the fury of Maria majestically. Structurally all docks are safe and sound. Dock boxes and wooden slip bumpers were lost here and there and some other minor damages, but nothing major. We even got water yesterday which quickly prompted a marina BBQ with our clients!
The real downside is the lack of electricity and internet/phones which hinder us from providing the neat service we are accustomed to. Nevertheless, recent progress has led us to believe we should be getting that back soon too.
On the bright side, we have been receiving both gasoline and diesel at the fuel dock which has helped us serve our clients and the community on that regard. It may take a couple of weeks/months to get back to where we were before Maria but we and the Puerto Real community is doing its best to speed up the process.
This is a very nice and very well sheltered bay. It’s very shallow but we could go in with our 45 feet sailing yacht with a draft of 2,20 meters. We stayed 3 nights in the marina because we were waiting for spare parts for the generator. We ended up staying more than a week and really liked it. Jose Mendez in the marina is a super nice and very helpful person.
When we anchored out in the bay we still had pretty good internet in the boat. We stayed in Boucheron before going here, but we liked Puerto Real more. You can’t really swim in the bay which is a minus, but there are really nice beaches a dinghy ride away.
We also had a positive experience here. We called them and said we would come from Boqueron for water and diesel. As we hoisted anchor, a gear shift wire on the engine broke. Calling back telling them we were stuck for a while, they put us in contact with their mechanic Anibal Andujar. He and his staff were very efficient in getting us a new cable delivered to Boqueron. Two days later we were operational again!
We had a great experience at Marina Pescaderia. We arrived late, having been turned away by the yacht club at Boquerón, and the owner of the marina offered to let us tie up at his fuel dock overnight, which we did. We topped off our fuel ($2.79 per gal. vs. $6 in Turks & Caicos!) and water (no charge!) and he actually loaned us a car and driver to take us the 1.5 miles to our restaurant in Cabo Rojo! The marina is in good condition and about 70% occupied, unlike some of the larger and better-known marinas in Puerto Rico.
The owner later came and joined us for a beer at the restaurant, filling us in on the area and the Mona Passage, which we were planning to cross the next day. The charge for docking was a very reasonable $1 a foot, and the owner is eager to welcome more transient boaters. We would have stayed longer but had plans to meet friends in the Dominican Republic.
