Alofi - Activities, Attractions & Shopping
Sports Facilities
Golf: Visitors welcome at the Niue Golf and Sports Club. Compact nine-hole golf course.
Bike: A new network of cycle tracks have been established for mountain bike enthusiasts. Niue is 250 km square with the highest point only 80 metres. A ring road of 68 km that is mainly sealed plus cross-island roads in good condition gives plenty of scopes to explore the myriad of snorkeling spots. Bike hire is available on the island.
Run: Hash House Harriers, run/walk on Monday afternoons. Tel: 3001.
One of the main attraction of Niue is the clarity of water. With underwater visibility at least 40 metres, and humpback whales and calves here from July through to September, it is scuba diver’s paradise. Whales and their calves are often found right in the mooring field basking on the surface, and cruisers are kept awake at night with the whale’s singing to one another.
Rainforest walking amongst flocks of butterflies in the virgin rainforest of the Huvalu Forest Conservation Area, should not be missed.
Niue has spectacular underwater caves, as well as land caves that are easier to get to. Tali Magatogia is a local who has been running tours into the caves for many years. Up until the mid-1800s, most Niueans lived in the caves.
Supermarkets and stores are located in Alofi and stock a full range of groceries, frozen goods, and hardware.
Most shops are open from 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday, and a number of the larger stores now open on Saturdays too.
There are generally one or two stores in most villages around the island which open during early mornings or evenings. Some smaller shops are open on weekends for grocery, and residents in the villages will happily direct you to the nearest shop.

Niue Yacht Club
“The Biggest Little Yacht Club in the World”
An incredible group of volunteers – all non-sailors – have been helping out cruisers for over 40 years on the delightful, small Pacific atoll of Niue – lying on the direct route from French Polynesia to Vava’u in Tonga. The “Biggest Little Yacht Club in the World” (or Niue Yacht Club) has provided safe moorings, shoreside assistance, a club house and the warmest welcome anywhere to visiting yachts since 1975.
Just in time for the start of Cyclone season, Niue’s Maritime Borders have re-opened after three seasons with no entry to transiting yachts. While this is great news for cruisers planning a 2023 Pacific crossing, the length of border closure now means that the Niue Yacht Club is in trouble and may well be facing closure.
Fighting to find some solution to rising Government fees, lack of volunteers due to a very small adult population on Niue and no headquarters for the Club, long-time member Keith Vial has launched a search for a Commodore at Large for the 2023 cruising season.
For Niue to remain a destination for yachts crossing the Pacific, the legendary NYC must survive and get back on its feet, so now it’s the cruising communities’ turn to support the Club that has helped them so much over the years.
If you have been to Niue and enjoyed the NYCs hospitality, please e-mail keithvial@gmail.com with your support and let’s try and keep this cruisers’ paradise on the Pacific crossing map.
