See Noonsite/Netherlands/Formalities page for the full details for clearing into The Netherlands.

Vessels from outside the Schengen Countries cannot enter Lauwersoog without reporting to the Konklijk Marechaussee (Immigration Authority ). This can be done by phone or fax. When reporting, the skipper should have three copies of a list containing details of the crew (with first and second name, sex, date of birth and passport number ) and also the yacht (name, flag and homeport). After reporting in you will be instructed either to proceed (the usual action) or to go to the nearest yacht harbour and wait for an Officer to visit. Three hours before departure, report to the same authorities.

The channel into Lauwersoog from the sea moves frequently. The popular CM93 charts are completely wrong. Make sure you have the latest chart and contact “Traffic Centre Schiermonikoog” on VHF ch5 to confirm recent changes before attempting entry.

This harbour is the only jumping off point for the island of Schiermonickoog, not mentioned on the site. The small ships harbour of Schiermonnickoog is tidal but can be approached at local HW plus or minus 1.5 – 3 hours, depending on draught. A recent chart is essential.

There is a visitors marina in the outer harbour, easy to access from the seaward side and catering for any size vessel. Check-in time is 1200, pay at a machine, if you arrive early you get billed an extra day! There’s another marina through the lock in the non-tidal Lauwersmeer catering to smaller yachts.

Next Generation shipyard in the outer harbour has one of the biggest travel lift hoists in Europe, it can handle catamarans up to 10 metres beam and lifts anything from a 20ft yacht to a small ship. Their prices for small boats are very reasonable despite the size of the lift. They have plenty of hard standing, a paint shop and indoor heated work sheds. full shipyard facilities. The inner harbour also has a small travel lift. Diesel and petrol are available from the inner harbour or by jerrycan.

There are several fish restaurants and a big chandlery on the outer harbour catering mainly for fishing vessels but also yachts. There’s a very small supermarket located inside the huge campsite, it’s the only shop! This is on the inner harbour. Beyond the marina is a museum harbour for traditional boats and the campsite facilities (restaurant and supermarket) are on the other side of that harbour.

Anchor for free in the inner harbour outside the marina in the lauwersmeer where it is very sheltered and only about 3 meters deep.

The lock into the lauwersmeer is 8.5m wide and has a lifting bridge. This is also a good entry point to the “Staande Mast route” through the canals to Harlingen or into the Ijselmeer, or the other way to the Ems.
