I second the comments about the usefulness and pleasantness of the Mgarr marina, and the helpfulness of the officials next door. (June 2018) I would also add that immediately outside of the marina is a good anchorage, especially in non-extreme weather. We left our boat for the day to tour the island and were completely comfortable. Be careful of the moorings, though, as tourist boats use those at night, and you don’t want to be swinging into them.
One other note – if you are looking for a terrific, if pricey, meal try Tmun. This restaurant, right on the waterfront in Mgarr, was a recommendation from ladies we met at the Anglican church in Valletta. They come to Gozo simply to eat there. We enjoyed it so much that we ate there twice in 3 days.
Mgarr marina is a nice marina with helpful staff and reasonable pricing (May 2018). Despite the ferry traffic in the harbour, the moorage is quite peaceful. Washrooms are so-so, wifi is good, excellent security (for access) access to buses for rest of the island is great (at the ferry terminal). Good restaurants nearby.
Just recently visited Mgarr Marina (April 2018). Very disappointed! Marina facilities not maintained, very run down…showers not working, taps missing, toilets not flushing, no toilet seats, just generally very unclean. Manager very hostile when we voiced our opinion of the substandard facilities offered for the price we paid, 45 Euro for an 11.9-meter yacht.
Marina does not offer great protection at all…unfortunately we were there in Easterly winds, very uncomfortable and almost untenable. You also have the Ferry wash to contend with (they leave every 3/4 of an hour 24 hours per day). Interesting to read the earlier comment.
Gozo itself was absolutely stunning and we really enjoyed our visit to the island, just be prepared for very poor facilities unless the Manager has since acted on our feedback!
Extract from a report by Robert Burn who visited Gozo in October 2017:
Gozo has a small harbour for the ferries at Mgarr, where there is also a respectable marina with berths to spare. Gennaro is the accommodating manager at the Marina, and there are the Customs and Immigration offices next door which makes our clearances in and out quick and easy without fuss.
The Marina charges were at the Imray “charge band” of 4, which is supposed to be at the budget end of the scale, or Euro 65 for our vessel. The toilets and showers were clean and reflected a well-managed enterprise. At the end of the quay, there is a rustic fisherman’s bar, the “Gleneagles”, that is festooned with fine exhibits of marine taxidermy.
Assisted by Gennaro, I sourced LPG supplier Brian Magro who tops up my cylinder and sells me another full 10kg bottle with compliant fittings for a very reasonable price. His wife then kindly takes me and my burden back to the marina.
My crew take me out for a most enjoyable birthday dinner, the steak and wine are fine, and the chocolate cake is a pleasant surprise. The cuisine is generally quite agreeable, and the main town of Victoria has a variety of linguistic and architectural elements reflecting the past. As we have found elsewhere, the locals are generally friendly and engaging.
