Miri - Docking
The Miri Marina, although sited rather far from the town, is a convenient berth and in a well-sheltered lagoon.
It is situated south of the main port of Miri, 2km from Miri town and 1km from Marina ParkCity (a newly developed residential area with shops and restaurants).
The marina entrance is easily identified by the huge statue of a Sea Horse (the emblem of Miri) on the port hand side, with the Cococabana complex where they have WE markets. There is a low, rocky, breakwater on the starboard side, and it is recommended to favor this side on entry.
The entrance channel has been recently dredged and there is a new pontoon installed on the port-hand side. This is for the supply boats for the oil platforms along the coast and is regularly used between 0500 and 2200. Besides a little noise, this has no negative effect on yachts at the marina.
Be aware that there can be breaking waves outside the marina entrance if a large swell is running. A night entrance is not recommended.
Access into the town is easy by taxi, bike or bus. It is approx. a 45 min. walk.
Beware of the marina´s resident crocodile when carrying out underwater jobs.
Miri Marina is a support point for the Trans-ocean sailing club (see comment below with contact details).
Alternatively, the Miri river is deep enough and can be navigated a few miles before reaching a low bridge. But there is lots of big commercial traffic and not easy to find any safe place to anchor out of the way.

Updates for Miri Marina:
At the entrance channel of the marina on the Port side, a new pontoon has been installed. The pontoon is used by a supply boat for the oil platforms along the coast. The supply boats come in and out regularly from 5.00 am till 10.00 pm.
Besides some noise, they have no negative effect on yachts at the marina.
The website for the marina (www.marinamiri.com) has been updated and tides and general weather patterns for Miri have been included.
We have stayed in the marina for 18 months and still enjoy the active social life here.

Miri Marina is a safe, very well protected marina, close to Miri town. The entrance coordinates are 04.22,91 N – 113.58,12 E. The entrance is straight forward. A good landmark is the big seahorse statue at the marina entrance. The entrance channel has recently been dredged. In March 2017 the channel had at least 2,6 m at 1,3 m tide.
The harbour master is Captain Fin, Mobile Nr. 0060142730186. The marina has approximately 50 berths from 30 to 60 feet. Since the new shower and toilet block has been finished, nice toilets and shower are available. There is also a BBQ porch which the boaters can use.
The newly developed residential area, Marina Parkcity, is just 1 km away from the marina and has a lot of restaurants. The town centre is about 2 km away from the Marina. The marina has a 24-hour security guard. Fuel is available in Jerry Jugs from the petrol station. Empty LPG Bottles are picked up at the marina and brought back refilled the next day.
Hardware stores are all over the town. Miri has an airport with flights to Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Kota Kina Balu and Singapore. Miri is port of entry and checks in and -out is easy and fast.
Miri Marina is also Trans-ocean support point. The support point leader is Walter and Gisela Mittasch on SV Atlantis.

For those travelling between Miri and Tanjung Sirik to the south (the north end of Pulau Beruit), be aware of an unlit oil platform. Approximate location is 03 45.18 N and 112 27.09 E — about 50 miles NW of Bintulu.
We passed this just before midnight on 26 December 2015 and were lucky there was some visibility at the time. The platform is not charted on older CMAP93. I don’t know the status of other chart products.

Posted on behalf of Paul Carne, SY Pelican V: Prices have increased recently – 1.30 MR/ft/day for monos & 1.50 MR/ft/day for cats, plus 5 MR per day for power & water. For this, you get to use the 4 cubicles portaloo toilet/shower cubicles that look like they have never seen a cleaners brush in years! Compared to Johor Baru at 100 MR per week (or part thereof – need to watch that last bit) for any length boat or Port Dickson which is 30% less than JB and they have marble bathrooms and a pool – Miri is very expensive.
However, the only other option to the marina is to anchor in the river, which is not an option as there is nowhere to go ashore and there are large oil field supply vessels constantly moving past.
Option #2, if one ignores the no anchoring signs that you pass on entering the marina, there are 2 canals with only an occasional MacMansion (under construction) to be seen – but again shore access is a problem unless you use the marina which is quite doable as there is no management on site.
There is no point calling the marina on arrival as no one is here. Any help tying up is supplied by other cruisers. Just pick a berth and go for it.
Posted on behalf of Chris Marchant, SY Gryphon 2: We had a good experience with the Miri engineers Dai Lieng who are Volvo agents. They fitted a new damper plate promptly and apparently made a good job of it, although they do not have much experience with yachts.
Getting the part from the UK took about a week mostly held up by customs but with no tax. It seems that DHL has a good track record for avoiding customs problems. It is also worth noting that any parcel should be labelled “ships spares” with this “harmonisation code” somewhere prominent on the package: HS 9800.00.700
