Called into Palermo after an autopilot failure on a recently-purchased 70-year old classic making a passage, with two on board, from Greece to her new home in Majorca.

Good: berthed on the inside of harbour wall of La Cala right next to the fuel berth. Very well looked after by Roberto, the berthmaster. He chased hard on our behalf to get the Raymarine agent to come and have a look at the autopilot problem. (Roberto doesn’t have English but a boat-owning friend acted as an interpreter)

Disaster. The Raymarine agent in Palermo, TechnoTeam, was awful. We arrived on Sunday, I sent a full email with photos describing our problem to TechnoTeam that day, and had a good introductory call first thing Monday morning. It went downhill from there:
    – Monday: ‘I’ll be on board at 10.00’. No show, Didn’t answer my phone, or respond to emails or texts. The berthmaster (Roberto – see above) chased on my behalf, and got a promise the agent would be on board at 14.00. No show
    – Tuesday: further chasing by both Roberto and his yacht-owning colleague. No show
    – Wednesday: gave up, and arranged for a friend to fly out to join us so we could hand-steer for the rest of the trip. Then 17.00, the Raymarine agent arrived unexpectedly. Diagnosed the problem as a failed central computer. It’s an old ST70+ system, so he wasn’t sure he could find even a secondhand replacement, but promised faithfully to communicate (either way) by 14.00 Thursday
    – Thursday. No communication. Calls/messages/emails not answered. New crew member arrived late evening.
    – Friday. Sailed at 08.00.

No complaints that Raymarine’s agent couldn’t solve the problem. And I’m sure he was technically competent. Major complaint about his service and communication: he shouldn’t make appointments he can’t keep; he shouldn’t blank me so I don’t know what’s going on; and if it’s a ‘sorry, it’s summer holidays, I’m overwhelmed with work and I can’t help’ then that is useable information from which I can take decisions.

PS learned from local boat-owner (above) that the agent is notorious for awful service.
PPS the Raymarine website has the wrong telephone for the Palermo agent – one too few digits and anyway the wrong number

Additional to a well managed Marina, Nautica Galizzi has a small but very efficient boatyard the which can handle small and large repairs. All chandlers and more mechanical workshops are just around the corner which should make this the ideal place to resolve basically any issue on any type of boat. Fixed a issue with a overheating sterntube with no delay in July 2019.

I stayed at Nautica Fratelli Galizzi for a couple of nights in July. Having just sailed from Majorca over 5 days I was quite tired and the marina entry is both busy and, once at the marina itself, a bit tight. However, I was met by one of the owners in his boat at the harbour entrance and guided in by him, making it so much easier.

The marina secure and well protected. Don’t be put off by its location, it is only a 10-minute walk into the heart of Palermo. The facilities are a bit basic, within only 1 shower and toilet, but this didn’t seem to cause any problems. There is a boatyard which looked like it can cope with any repair, and a couple of chandleries within a couple of minutes walk. There is a laundering service which cost 20 euros for a large bag which I handed over late afternoon and got back the following morning cleaned and dried (excellent service).

I thought this a bit expensive for the facilities (65 euros per night for a 10m yacht), but you have to put it in the context of being in Italy in high summer and Palermo is well worth a visit. I intend staying in Sicily for a couple of years and to travel around the island. This marina is certainly one I’d go back to.

We stayed at Galizzi in August 2017. they charged us 75 euros for one night (41-foot boat) and didn’t warn us about the party that was about to take place in the marina. It was very noisy and we didn’t sleep much. The next day we were kicked out at 11 because they had another booking for the berth – again, they didn’t tell us about this in advance. Very unfriendly staff. We loved Palermo though, very much worth a visit!

Hi, I stayed at Fratelli Galizzi from April until October 2015. One can only recommend this place. Good service and very helpful in all means. Had some works done by the family very accurate and good. 10 minutes walk to the centre of the city. All facilities close, Airport about 30-40 mins. I will return! Palermo is always worth a visit!

The website ormeggiopalermo.it will introduce you Nautica Fratelli Galizzi (tel.+39 091324124). This is the first floating dock on the right when entering “La Cala” or old port of Palermo. They are a full-service boatyard with transient rates around 50 Eu. a night. They have wifi and offer the shower in their workshop (quite decent) to visitors. Pleasant and competent family run a business. A bit of a walk into Palermo, but centrally located.
