Kalamata - Docking

The marina is located to the west of the commercial harbour. All yachts should head to the marina.

The marina entrance can be difficult and possibly dangerous in strong southerlies as it is rather narrow. It is also very shallow (2.4 meters). Berth where directed. The shelter here is excellent although southerly gales can cause a surge at the berths closest to the entrance. Be sure to pull the boat well off the quay.

SY Funny Girl who visited Kalamata in September 2016 found space in the commercial harbour. See their harbour guide, showing possible mooring spots for yachts in dark blue.  A report in September 2018 advised that there are plenty of mooring spaces and that diesel can be obtained from a delivery bowser.

Limeni

This is a large bay lying two hours south of Kalamata. There is a good anchorage with good holding on the western side of the small cove in front of the village, although it should be avoided in strong winds from the W/NW (unfortunately the prevailing wind in this area). Take care not to get your anchor hooked on the big ground chain running right across the centre of this cove. The bottom is sand and weed with some rocks.

An alternative is the NE corner of the bay at Karavostasi. There is a short stone breakwater here where you can moor alongside or stern-to (3-5 meter depth), depending on space. It does tend to be popular with local fishing boats. There is a local taverna and basic provisions are available.

Kalamata: Cool place, but beware not much water (2.4 meters at entrance) and if strong south/west winds, entering the marina is dangerous. Very few safe anchorages in the area.

Limeni exposed to NW (dominant wind). On the West side, Koroni more or less OK, Methoni better, Navarino bay much safer, but the port of Pylos is in terrible shape (free, but hence almost full because of abandoned boats everywhere and garbage all over the place).

On the East side, nothing good before Kayio, and there, beware of both NW and NE winds (NW falls down the mountain) and bottom is a thin layer of sand and hard rock below.

It is a beautiful area but do not expect good shelters and the weather forecasts are totally unreliable in southern Peloponnese. Navarino, Methoni, Koroni, Kayio, Kythera, and Ythion are beautiful though.

The small breakwater is now occupied by 1 or 2 fishing vessels, not much space left for yachts. When we were there we had a westerly wind of 8 knots and then it was nearly not safe to stay there.

When you do not want to go into the yacht harbour, one can moor in the commercial harbor, not a nice place but yachts are not sent away.

    Reported by Tony Olin:

Kalamata, good marina, well run and reasonable pricing. Good town for shopping and good tavernas close by. Fuel man calls every day, nice town to spend some time there. Ideal for crew changes with the local airport nearby and good bus connection to Athens.
