Kithera - Docking

Pelagia

On the island’s NE coast this old ferry port has good docking on the breakwater with good depths (water at the root of the breakwater and a mini market). Yachts can also tie up to the old ferry quay, now redundant. There is a choice of tavernas and a minimarket. Suitable for settled weather, but best avoided with winds from the NW.

Dhiakofti

Situated halfway down the island’s east coast this is the main ferry port. Moor to the south side of the quay. There are card operated water and electricity boxes.

Shelter is good in all but strong north-easterlies. This is a busy ferry harbour, however, it only really wakes up when a ferry comes in. There is a mini-market here.

In westerly winds, it is best to use the anchorage on the east side of the island of Makronisos. The holding is reasonably good in weed and sand.

Kapsali

Grand port on the south coast of the island with excellent shelter from all but SW winds in 4 to 5 meters just off the beach or on the dock which has electricity and water available. Cards for this from the local market shop.

Med moor to the quay.  Can be subject to swell and is untenable in strong southerlies. If anchoring, be sure to anchor outside the inner bay well clear of the approaches to the harbour. Space is normally tight during the summer months as Kapsali has become popular with young Greeks who flock here with their motorboats.

Several good tavernas in the port and a nice place to spend a few days and visit the nearby chora.

Availmonas

A small but pretty anchorage with good shelter in all but south winds.  Anchor in 10 – 12 metres and take a stern line to the rock breakwater of this little fishing port.  Very nice village with tavernas and shops.

    Reported by Tony Olin:

Pelagia, Kithera – a good little port to visit, great docking on breakwater with good depth, the ferry no longer calls here and there is docking on the old ramp at the entrance to the harbour.

Water and electricity available, no charge when we were there, good tavernas and mini market etc. nearby. There is lots of shipping going through the channel between Kithera and Elafonesous, advise use of AIS in this area and keep a sharp lookout.
