Evripos Canal (Khalkis/Chalcis) - Clearance
There is now a website for the marinas and ports on the whole of Evia, which now has an island-wide computer system.
Procedures for paying/transiting the bridge.
The payment is made in an office on the left-hand side of the Commercial Port entrance which is about 200 metres south of the bridge on the Evia side. (north end of Point C on the website). There is a large ’roundabout’ (traffic circle) immediately south of the bridge and you simply follow the quayside south until you are in front of a security gate with a security guard. He will direct you to the office opposite his hut. You will need your Registration document.
Once you’ve paid you will be directed to the Port Police office (see paragraph below). You will need your Registration document, Insurance, and DEKPA.
You will be told via VHF Channel 12 at what time to standby for your passage through the bridge. It is likely to be from 21:00 onward. The Port Police give two calls by vessel name, first to give you time to single up, second to slip and proceed. It is all well organized.
North to South Transit – a caution.
The southern section of the quayside is littered with dinghy moorings and laid lines reducing the available quayside and introducing floating hazards.
There are few bollards on the quay, mostly on the northern section and only small mooring rings to the south.
The quay itself has an underwater projection, a shelf or a step, just below the waterline in places. It is of ideal dimensions to give concerns for the turn of your bilge, although depths alongside are in the region of three metres (10 ft).
The quayside ladders project from the quay face. You need to be well fendered.
The Port Police office is on the southeast side of the bridge on Evia itself. Go straight ahead after crossing the bridge on foot, past a large blue “Parking” sign. The Port Police building is about 50 meters up on the right side, but the entrance is hard to find because it is up a small, unlikely looking alley just before you get to the building. This may change once all the surrounding building work is completed.
Most cruising boats pay 29€. This includes the additional charge of 25% for night-time passage (yachts are only allowed through at night). There is an additional surcharge of 75% for passage on a Sunday or holiday.
When transiting the bridge from south to north it makes sense to anchor under the fort (in 10 meters/33 ft with good holding) and dinghy into the Port Police. Alternatively, it may be possible tie up to the quay, pay and then go and anchor.
Mooring and Evripos Crossing Fees Office working hours are Monday to Friday 08.00 – 22.00 and Saturday – Sunday 18.00 – 22.00.

“Southbound traffic transits first.” This is not correct and hasn’t been for at least a decade. The initial direction is set by any large ships which wish to transit: they’re not going to keep them hanging about.
But there’s no ambiguity: all skippers are briefed beforehand, and then updated by radio before transit.
Posted on behalf of SY Funny Girl – 9 July, 2015:
I just get the information that since the first of July the bridge price has doubled.
It is now 36 € for a 12-metre boat and at the weekend 75% higher!
If you are looking for anchorages in the Evia Channel DO NOT consider Nisos Stira’s anchorage on the East coast. The pilot and charts suggest 5-10m depth, we found this only with yards of the rocks. Everywhere else was 25 – 35m deep.
When transiting the bridge South to North it makes sense to anchor under the fort (10m Good Holding) and dinghy into the port police, but watch the tied through the gap.
Alternatively tie up on the quay, pay and then go and anchor. South bound traffic goes through the bridge first and boats on the quay get a lot of wash from fishing boats coming through.
Additionally, boats at anchor will be ready to go through the bridge before boats on the quay who have to wait for the traffic to pass before leaving the quay.
