Port Siros (Ermoupolis)

This is a bustling harbor and town and a lively alternative to its quieter neighbouring islands. Moor on the northeast side of the harbor using your own anchor. The ferries create quite a bit of wash here so take care. When approaching, keep to the east to avoid the commercial activity close to the entrance. The bottom is mud and the holding, good.

Excellent shelter from northerly winds, but southerlies can cause an unpleasant swell, and strong winds from this direction can make the quay a dangerous place for yachts. It can also get quite smelly here in the summer.

Water, electricity, and fuel are available on the quay (please pay the Harbour Master for water and electricity).  Showers and toilets are located in the Harbour Master building.

For help with lines, and to pay for services, contact Harbour Master Thanasis (see listing below).

The marina, in the south of the bay, is some way from the town. It has no facilities and offers poor shelter in northerlies. In calm weather however, the marina can be useful because there is a supermarket close by, and there is a free shuttle bus to Ermoupolis.

Finikas

The harbor here is located in the NW corner of the bay and is a more peaceful harbor than Ermoupolis with good shelter. You may find space inside the harbor, however the majority of yachts tend to moor bow/stern-to off the south side of the outer mole, where there is good protection from the prevailing wind. Be sure however to pull your boat a good distance back from the mole, as the wash from passing ferries can cause a surge.

It is also possible to anchor off the beach outside the marked swimming area in sand and weed with good holding. Watch out for laid moorings.

There is water on the quay and a simple shower and toilet block. Finikas has some small chandleries and yacht service companies (see harbor noticeboard for details).

It can get crowded in Finikas at the weekends as it is a charter base.

Local weather (in English) on VHFChannel 04 at 06:00/10:00/16:00 & 22:00 UTC – [info. from 2013]

    Finikas.
A great port to shelter from the meltimi either on the dock or on anchor in the bay.
The harbour master Nicos is very nice guy and of great help to visitors.
We paid under €20 to inc water and electricity.
The bus to Ermoupolis is near by and costs only €2.
A nice port to visit with taverna’s and some shopping.

Marina Sirou near Ermoupolis does NOT have any facilities (no water and no electricity, and no toilets or showers), and it does not offer good shelter in northerly winds (Meltemi).

Had we known, we would have gone to Finikas instead, with the Meltemi blowing, you are much more comfortable there.

In calm weather however, the marina can be useful because there is a supermarket close by, and there is a free bus shuttle to Ermoupolis which is a very pleasant town.

In Finikas don’t feel obliged to stop at the first (expensive) restaurant; there’s much more to the place a little way down the road.
