French Guiana - Health
Excellent medical care is available, but few doctors speak English.
Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:
French Guiana is considered a yellow-fever-infected area. Vaccination against yellow-fever is obligatory and you must produce a Yellow Fever certificate on arrival if flying into the country. Cruisers arriving in SLM have never been asked to show a certificate.
Food and Water Concerns:
Water is fine in bigger towns; drink bottled or boiled water elsewhere.
Mosquito-borne Diseases:
The Zika virus is present in French Guiana. Take extreme precautions if you are pregnant, and avoid the rainforest altogether.
Chloroquine-resistant malaria is present in the interior, but there is a very low risk of malaria in SLM.
Prevention:
- Use a repellent containing 20%-30% DEET or 20% Picaridin on exposed skin. Re-apply according to manufacturer’s directions.
- Wear neutral-coloured (beige, light grey) long-sleeved clothing.
- Pre-soak or spray outer layer clothing and gear with permethrin.
- Ensure that hatch and window screens work properly.
