With the continual change in protocols due to the pandemic, we outline the last-known situation below for yacht arrivals. Skippers should follow the recommended links in “resources” to confirm the latest protocols. Always check with your intended port of arrival before getting underway to be 100% certain of what is required. Please e-mail editor@noonsite.com if you find protocols have changed.

COVID-19:  CLOSED

November 2022

  • Land borders are still closed and not expected to open in the short term.
  • All restrictions on international flights have been lifted.
  • Entry by yacht should only be considered in cases of emergency at this time.
  • Cruisers report on the Red Sea Passage FB group that entry into Massawa was possible to replenish water, but re-stocking took 4 days or more.

Ministry of Information Eritrea

History: 

  • The Ministry of Health issued a travel notice in March 2020, urging foreigners to reconsider their travel plans to Eritrea.
  • By the end of March, further public guidelines were issued by the Ministry of Health asking
    for a limit on all non-essential travel and movement, suspension of all
    public gatherings, closure of cinemas and nightclubs, social distancing.
  • The international airport in Asmara closed on 26 March, 2020, as a precaution against COVID-19. No legal entry points into Eritrea for normal travelers remained open.

    Another sailing boat had problems with the Eritrean authorities. The yacht was kept in the port of Massawa for over a month аfter an emergency stop near the Eritrean coast.
