Stari Grad. Appears to be much upgraded since the Pilot Books were printed. Both sides of the harbours are stone quays with laid moorings and a capacity of perhaps over 100 yachts. The mooring bouys along the north side appear to have gone, although two are still in use at the far east end before the small boat harbour starts.
Arrive early as the Charter Fleets will be right behind you.
Pleasant town, despite the CFs. The cute version of Hvar. Wall to wall restaurants. The wine shop west of the HM office sells a surprisingly good local white, don’t be put off by the recycled plastic bottles.

Hvar town is well worth a visit. Its entire focus is the tourist trade and ferries from the mainland run regularly with arriving and departing holiday makers. The town quay is expensive and generally used for large motor yachts. There are mooring buoys on the west side of the harbour, taking lines ashore, which are more reasonably priced.
Hvar town is a party town. If on the Town Quay raise your passarelle at night to discourage boarders. Not a problem on the buoys.
Anchoring free in the harbour area will give you an entertaining time as the super yachts try to dodge you on arrival. The ferry to and from the islands is about 100kn per person so even for 2 a return trip is a significant proportion of the mooring fees.
Lovely town, clean, friendly, good restaurants, supermarkets and pharmacy. Castle is worth the climb if only for the views.

Hvar harbor was extremely crowded – and noisy at night – in July/August 2016. We anchored, much more pleasantly and peacefully, in the Pakleni archipelago just off Hvar. The bay one or two west of the Stari Stani is very pleasant, much cleaner and quieter than that bay where there are several bars and restaurants, a multitude of charter boats and other cruisers all anchored in close proximity to one another. Holding was good. The bay is narrow requiring med-mooring.
