Christmas Island - Bio-Security
With the continual change in protocols due to the pandemic, we outline the last-known situation below for yacht arrivals. Skippers should follow the recommended links in “resources” to confirm the latest protocols. Always check with your intended port of arrival before getting underway to be 100% certain of what is required. Please e-mail editor@noonsite.com if you find protocols have changed.
COVID-19: **OPEN**
August 2022
- Since 13 August, 2022, the declared State of Emergency for Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands is no longer in effect.
- The travel application process to enter IOT ceased on 1 August, 2022.
- Restrictions for travel have now been removed.
- The heath advice is to continue wearing a mask any time you’re out in public and to respect social distancing.
- Travellers are strongly encouraged to undertake a rapid antigen test prior to their travel to the IOT, and again on the third day after arrival. Travellers are required to report any positive test results while on island to the IOT Health Service (CI – 91648333, West Island 9162 6655, Home Island 9162 7609). Travellers will no longer be required to provide evidence of negative tests to the Office of the Administrator.

History:
- In recognition of the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) of Christmas Island (CI) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI) being remote communities, and their vulnerability to coronavirus, a state of emergency was declared in both territories on 18 March, 2020.
- In July 2021, the Islands opened to travelers arriving by air.
- Maritime borders remained closed to visiting yachts.
- Maritime borders opened to visiting yachts on 10 June, 2022.
- 04 July, 2022, yacht forms were available online.
- 01 August, 2022, all pre-registration forms were dropped and restrictions lifted.
- 13 August, 2022, the state of emergency stopped.

Here is some general info about Christmas Island after our visit in August 2022.
We arrived from Darwin (where we had to clear out) and contacted the C.I. Harbour Master, who told us which mooring we could use. Note that you are not allowed to arrive at night. Clearing in was friendly and easy.
Laundry: coin-operated machines opposite Golden Bosun pub.
Wifi: Free at Golden Bosun (limited), Bank and neighbouring water company (unlimited); paid at Tourist Office. Local SIM cards are not available.
Rent e-bike at Tourist Office or e-mountainbike at Recreation Centre (possibly via Tourist Office).
Car rental: Kiat Car Rentals (0439 215 388); Soong Car Hire (0439 215 889) – use public phone outside post office for free calls.
Mooring: AUD 10 per day (50 per week) to be paid in cash.
Cash: there are no ATMs. Cash inside the bank (with passport), or ask for cash-out at the supermarket when paying by card.
Provisioning: ask around for local fruit and vegetables. There is a farm on Murray Road where you might get some. The supermarket across from the Tourist Information sometimes has local food. Imported fruit & vegetables are available the evening or morning after the weekly flight arrives.
Smuggling operations in this area – it is the closest port for Asylum seekers entering from Indonesia / Malaysia
