There is a five-knot speed limit in the bay.

Anchoring:

Normally anchoring is not permitted in order to protect the coral, but if it is necessary, then yachts should beware of the chains between the shore and the large mooring buoys.

Moorings:

The use of mooring buoys is mandatory.

Call the Harbour Master on VHF Channel 16 to be advised on the mooring available. Night arrivals are not advisable.  The Harbour Master’s office is in the marine building which fronts the jetty. As a courtesy, skippers should make a call there.

A mooring fee is charged with AUD$10 per day which must be paid to the Harbour Master prior to clearance being issued.

Generally there are four to five moorings available for yachts and rafting up is almost impossible due to the swell that often enters the bay. However, in the Tradewind season when the winds stay in the SE, the anchorage is very acceptable.

A visit should be avoided during what the locals call swell season between December and April. There are talks about installing alternative moorings, but nothing is there as yet.

Dinghies:

Yacht dinghies used to ply to and from the jetty must observe the 8 knots speed limit and be aware of persons in the water at all times.

Yacht dinghies may tie up to the landward side of the landings and ramp at the head of the jetty. Dinghies are not to be secured to the aluminium stairs and landing on the eastern side of the jetty.

Facilities:

Located at the western end of the Marine building are the public showers and toilets, open 24 hours each day and provided for the convenience of visiting yachts. All you need is a towel and soap.

No garbage or galley washes to be dumped into the waters anywhere around the Island.  Any food or waste is quarantinable and cannot come ashore.  There are currently no facilities or arrangements for Christmas Island to accept quarantine waste.
