Paraty is one of the best well preserved historic town in Brazil. The other ones are Ouro Preto, Pirenopolis and Olinda. To get to Paraty, it’s better to leave your dinghy at marina 188 and take an Uber from there. If you go with your dingy to the town, you need to be aware of tides.
We’ve been there in May 2019 and absolutely loved the place. Never had problems leaving the dingy at Marina 188 for free.
The Capitania is open on weekdays only. They close during lunch.
September 2018 update on Paraty and Marina 188: Marina 188 no longer offers any services to anchored boats. We could not even use the showers against payment (only if moored at the marina). If intending to visit the town, it is closer to anchor near the jetty.
For those preferring natural surroundings, there are many beautiful, quiet and well-protected anchorages around Paraty. Both the anchorage near town and where we anchored elsewhere in the bay, had very good holding in mud (which stuck to the chain and needed to be washed off with a brush).
an update re Marina 188, we are anchored at the front of the marina, Leonardo is still the manager and a totally lovely and welcoming guy. We have been able to use the marina wifi and showers gratis, and tomorrow will go into the dock to take on water.
A very happy experience, and Paraty is gorgeous. Cheers, Margaret and Chris, Australia yacht “Storm Bay of Hobart”
