Rio de Janeiro - Transport & Travel

One of the best ways of getting around in Rio de Janeiro is by taking a taxi. They are not very expensive, but if you ask for a city tour, arrange a fixed price.

Buses are a cheap form of transport within Rio but the system is difficult to understand if you do not speak Portuguese. But be careful. They take off at high speed and do not limit the numbers on board, nor do they have to air-condition. The metro may be a better option.

Long distance bus services depart from the Rodoviária Novo, Rio.

The ferry from Niteroi arrives at Praça Quinze in the historical neighbourhood Centro.

International Airport is on Governador Island within the bay. National flights leave from the Aeroporto Santos Dumont just north of the entrance to Marina da Gloria.

International flights land at Galeão International Airport (recently renamed Tom Jobim International). It is quite a long way from the city centre.

Gloria Marina charges US$ 200/day for 43 ft. Anchor off and take the dinghy to ICRJ to ask… they will tell you visitors are NOT welcome, please leave.

Clearing in proved impossible: Policia Federal downtown says that they do not do that, one must go to the international airport 30 km. away. At the airport, they say they don’t clear in sailors.

The Capitania dos Portos is totally unreachable because of city reconstruction. Find the antique submarine and you are there. Good luck!
