    From Bahamas Chatter (Explorer Chartbooks)
Visual Piloting Rules must be used entering Bimini Harbor
    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:49 AM PST

Both red and green buoys are now missing at the entrance to Bimini Harbor. The shoal extending south from Entrance Point of North Bimini continues to extend to the south across the entrance of the channel to the harbor. Boats attempting to enter the harbor are running aground more frequently because they are relying exclusively on GPS positions on chart plotters and not attempting to look at the water and go where the water looks deeper. Visual piloting must be used here and is more important than electronic navigation in this area and others in the Bahamas. The bottom is easily seen here with good light and weather conditions.

The Bahamas Government has a long history of not maintaining aids to navigation and this should not be expected to change.

Expect the shoal to slowly continuing to move south.

Feedback from the Dockmaster at Browns Marina:

At the moment we do not have electricity on the Pedestals for boaters due to Hurricane Irma damages and the restaurant next door is not open also. We hope to have electricity in a few months but have no guarantee. We do have slips available except for T-head and water (metered). We can accommodate boats of 90ft and under. We do have Wifi.

LPG gas can be filled in Alice Town. There is a tanker truck parked at the very southern end on town by the beach. If there is no one around to fill it, walk back to town and stop at the very first liquor store (it has no sign, but is white building across from Big John’s store) and ask for Big Fred. He will come down and fill it for you.13USD to fill an 8lb bottle.

Working hours customs. Please note that, per March 2015, the customs officers are working 7 days a week from 0900 to 1900hrs (at least what we experienced at Bimini). Clearing at North Bimini only at the Big Game Fishing Club. As mentioned in the posting, all very efficient and effective. No boarding of vessel (well not ours).
