The size, type and private/charter status of the yacht is unknown, however a crew of 18 was mentioned in the news article indicating that perhaps this was a large day charter catamaran. Local contacts have been unable to get the type of yacht verified.
The news report states that the boat was boarded by armed persons (carrying machetes and knives, among other sharp weapons) who swam out to the boat at anchor and assaulted the occupants of the sailboat.
Money, jewelry, cell phones, boat electronics, high value clothing and other belongings were stolen.
The perpetrators were picked up from the yacht by a yola that was hidden in some trees on the island.
There are no reports of injury during the robbery.
Hoy.com report that this is the second case of assault on sailboats that has occurred in Boca Chica in less than two weeks. The first occurred in front of the Los Pescadores Pier which was recently inaugurated by President Luis Abinader.
The sources that offered details of the assault on the sailboat, did not say if there are people detained in relation to the fact, which has caused concern to boat owners in Boca Chica.
