Caribbean, St. Lucia, Soufriere – Robbery

Published 16 years ago, updated 5 years ago

We were moored on one of the mooring balls near the Bat Caves, just off Soufriere, St. Lucia, Christmas 2008. We had been there for three nights.

We had gone onshore upon our arrival and inquired of the SMMA (Soufriere Marine Management Association) about safety & security issues. They had told us to lock the boat if we left it, but that we would be safe while on it.

Sometime between the hours of 1:30 and 5:30 am on Christmas Eve, someone came onto our boat (whilst we were asleep on board) and stole our new laptop computer and cash. It was a rainy, windy night. We are a catamaran and had our door open for ventilation.

We were told later by a different person at the SMMA that another boat had been boarded and had items stolen the week prior.

At this point, I advise people to lock themselves into their boat if they are in the Soufriere area. Another boater has since reported an attempted break-in in Rodney Bay, St. Lucia.
