Caribbean: CSSN Reporting Continued Dinghy Thefts
Dinghy thefts continue to be reported from countries in the Caribbean, the latest from Aruba where the engines rather than the dinghies appear to be the targets and from Mexico where a dinghy was stolen from a yacht that had been at anchor for a week before the theft.

LOCATION: Aruba (the Netherlands) – Surfside Beach Anchorage
EVENT: Theft
HAND: 1
STOLEN ITEMS: AB dinghy / 15 HP Yamaha
SECURED: Not locked
DETAILS: Overnight while owners slept onboard their catamaran anchored at Surfside beach, thieves stole their in-the-water and not locked dinghy. It is not known if a police report was made.
UPDATE: a search was made the next day and the dinghy minus the outboard/fuel tank/oars was found in the mangroves, along with a another dinghy that had been stolen earlier in the week (see report below).

EVENT: Theft

STOLEN ITEMS: Dinghy/outboard engine
SECURED: Not locked
DETAILS: Overnight an unoccupied day charter catamaran had its dinghy/outboard stolen from the davits. It was not locked. It is not known if police report was made.
UPDATE : October 2, 2022 A search was made after a cruising sailboat had its dinghy/outboard stolen overnight on 10/1 (see report above) . Both stolen and now engine-less dinghies were found together in the mangroves. Video from the marina was not helpful as another boat blocked the camera view of the stern of the day catamaran.

LOCATION: Mexico – Xcalak
EVENT: Theft
HAND: 1
STOLEN ITEMS: Dinghy and 6HP Tohatsu outboard
SECURED: Not locked
DETAILS: Overnight while owner slept onboard the yacht’s in-the-water and not locked dinghy / outboard was stolen. No other visiting yachts were in the anchorage, and the yacht had been anchored there for about a week.
