COVID-19: OPEN PORT

Description:

The River Orwell flows through the county of Suffolk in England. It broadens into an estuary at Ipswich and then flows into the North Sea at Felixstowe after joining with the River Stour at Shotley.

Harwich is positioned on the estuaries of the Stour and Orwell rivers.

Harwich/River Orwell and the surrounding port (including Felixstowe) is a very active area for shipping and for large, high-speed ferries. It is very important that yachts follow the yacht track and stay well clear of the main channel. Also, though Harwich has a customs port, other marinas on the River Orwell (particularly Ipswich) have clearance facilities and it may be advisable to use them rather than bother with the busy-ness and traffic of the Harwich port.

Position:

51° 55.83’N, 01° 18.57’E (entrance)

River Orwell area: Compared to anywhere else I’ve been on the English coast, it is one of the best areas for facilities. However, it is worth mentioning that, though almost everything else is available here, pump-out for the waste tank is not. For whatever reason, all pump-out facilities have been done away with in this area; meaning: yachts must handle their waste before entering the river system. Local guidebooks and maps say that there are pump-out facilities at some of the marinas, but if you call them, they’ll refer you to another marina. Then that other marina will refer you back to the first marina.
