Beira - General Info
Description:
Mozambique suffered a direct hit by Cyclone Idai in 2019 and the port of Beira received signifiant damage. Idai was regarded as one of the worst tropical cyclones on record to affect Africa and the Southern Hemisphere as a whole. The long-lived storm caused catastrophic damage in multiple nations, leaving more than 700 people dead and hundreds more missing. The roads to Beira were cut off and heavy flooding occurred.
The port is located in the estuary of the River Pungue and access to it is through the Maputo Channel, which is approximately 10 miles long.
