The Royal Institute of Navigation Small Craft Group (SCG) provides information and shares best practices on electronic navigation systems and aids to navigation. Group members share a common desire to navigate efficiently and safely on-board small craft. The group organises regular talks on areas of interest and runs two biennial one-day conferences/seminars, which will be of interest to cruisers. Namely, the Electronic Navigation Conference and Weather and Sailing, the latter in conjunction with the RMetS. It has representation on committees of the MCA, Trinity House, Irish Lights, the Northern Lighthouse Board and the UKHO and also maintains close links with the RYA, CA and the RNLI. Recent and current projects of interest to cruisers include:

• The Guidance Booklet on Electronic Navigation Systems for Leisure Vessels (available FOC to download from the RIN website or for those who prefer the paperback version is available to purchase from IMRAY for £10)  and
• Chairing the MCA’s Pleasure Vessels Navigation Systems Working Group, liaising with electronic and paper chart providers, equipment manufacturers and user representatives to find an acceptable path for recognition of ‘For Navigation’ electronic charts and the systems on which they run for use by leisure vessels.
