Kephalonia - General Info
Description:
This is the largest of the Ionian islands and is green and rugged like its neighbour, Ithaca.
Argostolion – see separate entry – is the capital.
All the towns on the island (with the exception of Fiskardho) were destroyed in the 1953 earthquake and have been rebuilt using reinforced concrete. Consequently, Fiskardho is the most charming of island ports and the most popular. Be sure to arrive early in the day to secure quay space. A few old buildings remain, giving a hint of its more elegant past.
A yacht on passage from Malta to Kephalonia was hit 80NM from the coast at night by an unlit (fishing) vessel in June 2017. The vessel did not stop and the yacht was dismasted and badly damaged. Yachts should navigate with great care and vigilance at night in these waters. See report here.
Position:
38° 17.85’N, 020° 38.61’E (off Sami)

Fiskardho – Pontoon was in place in October 2016 but NOT there in September 2017.
Sami – It may be because we were part of a flotilla, but the charge for a 38ft mono was 2.00 Euros per day. Great little cafe/bar called Willy’s is worth a visit and is open until the early hours!
Reported by SY Funny Girl – September 2016:
Sami Harbor at Cefalonia,
There is now a harbour master in charge, helping and directing with mooring.
Boats have to pay the standard Greek harbour dues.
For our 14 meters, it was 8.16 Euros a day.
Free drinking water at the quay. There is NO electricity.
I visited Ay Eufimia October 2014, and we were sent off by the police due to the fact that there had been some serious accidents to visiting boats in the harbour that summer. We were told to dock in Sami instead which we did. Sami can be recommended.
