LOCATION: Grenada – Grenada – Clarke’s Court Bay Marina
EVENT: Theft
HAND: 1
STOLEN ITEMS: the yacht’s watermaker
SECURED: Not Locked

DETAILS:

Owners left their catamaran on the hard at Clarke’s Court Bay Boatyard in June 2019, when they returned in January 2020 the office staff was unable to locate the keys that had been left with the office staff. Key control procedures were clearly not in place/operational. The keys were eventually located by the owners in the possession of their (offsite) hired minders/guardianage company.

The yachts 110 lb watermaker was stolen during the storage period. Hoses and electrical connections had been severed, and all the holding bolts removed. Access to the watermaker was via an external engine compartment, which was not locked. Photos provided by the guardianage company did not include the area of the engine compartment where the watermaker was installed, so were not helpful in pinpointing the time of the theft. No video surveillance was present in this storage area.

The owners reported the theft to the boatyard office, and contacted the police. The police sent 2 detectives who talked with the victims, but took no photos or any forensics, despite the offer of the owners to preserve the scene. The owner visited the police department a few days later, paid a small administrative fee (US $3) and was promised an email copy of the report, which has not yet been received.
